Building Australia’s next generation cold chain

PressMay 7, 2026

Australia’s food supply chain is entering a period of rapid change. Population growth, shifting consumer habits, and rising expectations around efficiency, reliability and sustainability are increasing pressure across the cold chain. Meeting these demands requires more than incremental upgrades. It requires long term investment in modern, technology driven infrastructure across frozen, chilled and ambient temperatures.

Investing ahead of changing demand

Consumer demand in Australia continues to shift. While frozen remains a critical backbone of food distribution, recent market analysis shows that chilled consumption is growing faster, driven by population growth, convenience products, fresh formats and changing shopping behavior. Ambient also plays an increasingly important role as retailers and manufacturers rebalance networks and seek greater flexibility across temperature bands.

At the same time, food producers, processors and retailers are under pressure to control costs, improve service levels and meet higher safety and sustainability standards.

NewCold’s strategy in Australia has been to invest ahead of demand, developing facilities that can support multiple temperature segments with scale, automation and long term reliability. Our facilities in Melbourne already support both frozen and chilled operations, enabling customers to consolidate volumes, reduce handling complexity and improve inventory visibility across categories.

Automation plays a critical role in this approach. By automating storage and movement of goods, NewCold improves safety outcomes, increases accuracy and ensures predictable performance even as volumes fluctuate. This capability is becoming more important as chilled and retail supply chains grow more complex, with higher SKU counts, shorter shelf lives and tighter delivery windows.

Capacity across frozen, chilled and ambient

NewCold’s reputation has been built on high performance frozen logistics, but our Australian network is deliberately designed to support multiple temperature requirements.

Across our current operations and future developments, we offer:

  • Frozen capacity at scale for manufacturers and exporters
  • Chilled solutions that support faster moving, retail driven supply chains
  • Ambient capability and integration, enabling customers to streamline flows across temperature zones

As demand patterns evolve, NewCold intends to grow further in chilled and ambient, alongside frozen, ensuring our network aligns with customer needs rather than forcing customers into fixed models.

Expanding in Melbourne and Sydney

NewCold continues to expand its footprint in Australia to meet growing demand across segments.

In Melbourne, ongoing investment is increasing capacity and strengthening our ability to support customers across Victoria and beyond.

In New South Wales, construction is progressing on NewCold’s new automated cold storage warehouse in Sydney’s west, with opening planned for 2026. This facility represents a significant long term investment and has been designed with flexibility at its core, supporting high throughput while accommodating different temperature requirements and storage profiles.

The Sydney location has been selected to reduce transport complexity, improve response times and support customers servicing one of Australia’s fastest growing population centers.

Built for flexibility, not one size fits all

As supply chains become more dynamic, flexibility matters. NewCold’s model is not a one size fits all high bay ASRS solution. While automation and scale remain central, our facilities and operating models can be adapted to different product types, turnover speeds and customer requirements.

This is particularly relevant for chilled and retail supply chains, where variability, responsiveness and integration with downstream distribution are critical. NewCold works closely with customers to design solutions that fit their operational reality, whether that means full automation, hybrid solutions or staged growth over time.

Supporting safety, efficiency and sustainability

NewCold’s facilities are designed not only for capacity, but also for safer and more sustainable operations. Automation reduces manual handling and physical strain, improving safety outcomes for people working on site. Energy efficient systems and modern building design help reduce environmental impact while maintaining consistent temperature control.

By enabling customers to centralize storage and optimize transport routes, NewCold helps reduce unnecessary movements across the supply chain, supporting lower emissions, improved efficiency and greater resilience.

A long term partner for Australia’s food industry

NewCold works closely with customers across the food supply chain, from producers and processors to retailers and logistics partners. Our focus is on long term collaboration, delivering scalable and flexible solutions that can evolve as markets change.

As Australia’s food system continues to grow and diversify, reliable cold chain infrastructure across frozen, chilled and ambient will be essential. Through sustained investment, advanced automation and strategic network development, NewCold is helping ensure Australia’s food supply chain is ready for today’s challenges and tomorrow’s opportunities.
